A Movie A Day

Do you think it is possible to watch a movie a day for a year? Most people watch enough TV that if they watched a movie instead of watching tv. I am getting bored of all the boring TV there is today. Now that Shameless is over and the only thing worth waiting for every week is Doctor Who, I have decided that I want to try this movie a day thing. Since I currently have 468 items in the Netflix DVD queue, and 268 in my Instant Watch queue, I doubt that I will run out of things to watch.

Andromeda Strain Movie PosterSo today, 5/12, I started with the 1971 Sci-Fi Classic Andromeda Strain. While not a bad movie, I wouldn’t say that it is an amazing movie. It was a bit slow to get started, and maybe there could have been 15 minutes less of “de-contamination” but overall it was enjoyable. It represents the type of movie that just doesn’t get made anymore. There wasn’t much action, and focused around a group of non-sexy scientists, which you would never see today. Hell take the new Thor movie. Natalie Portman plays the sexy scientist. Here Kate Reid plays the scientist, and she is not super sexy.

Either way I think that if you haven’t seen it and you consider yourself into the whole Sci-Fi genre it is a must see. it shows you how far we’ve come when it comes to generic germ warfare movies.

Six String Samurai or WTF is this?

Six String Samurai DVDSo I’m sitting here watching Six String Samurai and all I can say is WTF is this? But in a good way. This movie seems to be a mix of bad samurai films, a little bit of El Mariachi, splash in a bit of A Boy and his Dog, and then garnish it with the umbrella from El Topo. This is one of those movies that is a must see if you are into indie cult camp films, which for me are a hit or miss. This one is a hit for me just on the acting of Buddy, the main Samurai Rocker. The voice and the mannerisms are prefect for the character.

Oh and did I mention that the soundtrack is done by the Red Elvises, a Soviet / American band that plays rockabilly music.

New Movies Tuesday 02/16/10

Well it is Tuesday and that means that there are a whole slew of new movies coming out on DVD. I am excited that Law Abiding Citizen is coming out this week because I wanted to see it when it was in theaters but never had the time make it out there. Below are a list of movies that are coming out today that I will probably end up watching, either renting it through Netflix, or picking up as a digital download over at Apple. As for everything else that is coming out this week, nothing really interests me. Hopefully next week will be better for new DVDs.

Law Abiding Citizen

Law Abiding Citizen Overview:  A frustrated man decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family’s killers free. From the trailers and the commercials this looks like one of those movies where there is moral gray zone as to who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. I don’t know for sure though until I watch it.

Die Antwoord and Zef culture.

In the last couple of days the internet has been buzzing about the rap group Die Antwoord (The Answer) that is based out of Cape Town South Africa. The group consists of Ninja,  Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek.

The make this awesome mix of rave/rap that represents Zef culture. Zef from what I understand if Afrikaans slang that I think would be best akin to “Redneck” or redneck pride. You have to check out these videos:

Lady Gaga Grammy Awards 2010 Performance with Elton John

Did you get a chance to see Sir Elton John perform along side Lady Gaga at last night’s Grammy awards. It was an amazing duet of a Elton’s “I Hope You Don’t Mind”

Video below:

I have been asking myself if Lady Gaga is here to stay or is just a passing fad. I think that she is on the cusp of becoming more then just a one dimensional singer. We’ll have to see the quality of her next few albums to really find out.

The Girlfriend Experience

girlfriend_experience_still-580x350So, I’m sitting here watching The Girlfriend Experience and I’m trying to figure out what the hell is going on. After all the hype about this movie, and all the talk about Sasha Grey doing her mainstream crossover, and the result is this disjointed, stale narrative. I had really high hopes for this movie, but I don’t even know if I want to finish it. I’m about half way through, and well things are not picking up. I already invested 45 minutes and well, I guess I’ll just finish it. But I’m not happy about it.

12 Rounds poster looks really familiar

21_Grams12_rounds

When I saw the poster for the new John Cena movie 12 Rounds I could have sworn I had seen it before. It bugged me for a bit, but then I remembered where I had seen that design. It was on the 21 Grams movie poster. Look for yourself. Doesn’t it look the same?
